A brief history of the West Vancouver Police Department (Tiddly Cove P.D.) with an introduction to some of the characters that worked in the organization. The author then relates stories of his early days as a constable with some of the adventures he encountered which included wrestling with a cow on a local beach, investigating shoplifting gangs affiliated with the Hell´s Angels outlaw biker gang. He also describes some novel ways that police officers dealt with motorists including an encounter that Constable Dave Marskell had with the mother of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and how Cst. Ed Fydirchuk dealt with ´´road rage´´. He exposes the listener to some of the humour that police officers use to deal with the stress and sometimes traumatic things they encounter in their workplace. The author then goes on to explore his career in criminal investigation when he is promoted to the rank of Detective. Again we see some of the humorous sides to police work, as well exploring the darker side of child sexual assault and the investigation that takes place before a prosecution. While the West Vancouver Police Department is a smaller one, approximately 100 sworn members, the investigations are far ranging and extend throughout North America and as far as Europe. The crimes of arson, extortion, fraud, robbery, and murder are all investigated. There is even an encounter with former members of The Mossad! Listeners will meet the prolific bank robber and purloiner of luxury yachts, Eric Valois, who would lead Detective Leishman on a chase throughout the USA before convincing a gullible Quebec Provincial Police Officer that he could solve the ´´Air India´´ bombing and having them assist him in escaping custody. After he was arrested in Greece for stealing a luxury yacht. He was declared dead when he jumped overboard while being escorted to prison, but was returned from the dead when he was arrested for drug dealing in the United Kingdom! 1. Language: English. The maestro of Minimalist piano music has done it again, with an album of gentle melodies and soothing sounds from Yann Tiersen (b.1970) a composer best known outside his native France for the soundtrack to the movie Amélie (2001): the soundtrack sold over 200,000 copies in his homeland, and became Platinum in the US and Germany. Tiersen´s music helped to make the movie a hit, capturing its bittersweet mix of humour and sadness, and many of the best-known pieces from the soundtrack are included on this new album, such as the Satie-tinged ´Waltz of Amélie´, but there is much more recent music here which Tiersen wrote in the wake of the film´s success, including extracts from his soundtracks to Goodbye Lenin (2003) and Tabarly (2008), which tells the tragic story of the French sailor Eric Tabarly, who won the Single-Handed Transatlantic Yacht Race twice before drowning in the Irish Sea. Tiersen´s music is often melancholy and reflective, but there are many lighter and more uptempo numbers on this wide-ranging survey of his output, which is sure to share the popular success of Jeroen van Veen´s many other albums for Brilliant Classics such as his Minimalist Piano Collections (8551 and 9171) and compendiums of Ludovico Einaudi (94910 and 9452), Simeon ten Holt (9434 and 9453) and Jacob ter Veldhuis (94873). ´The music needs to speak for itself, and that it does, in this consistently enjoyable collection, I have no reservations in recommending to anyone who enjoys minimalism´ (Fanfare). French composer Yann Tiersen (born 1970) is one of the most popular and successful film music writers of today. His soulful and melancholic music finds its traces in folk music, French chansons, musette waltzes, street music, but also in the minimalism of Satie, Glass and Nyman. His international breakthrough came with the music for the French blockbuster ´´Amélie´´. Later followed ´´Goodbey Lenin´´ and others. Dutch pianist, pioneer and champion of Minimalism Jeroen van Veen recorded Tiersen´s most popular melodies, playing the piano in his inimitable way: focussed, serene and hypnotising. A worthy successor of Van Veen´s successful recordings for Brilliant Classics of piano music by Glass, Pärt, Yiruma and many others.
Six phenomenally sophisticated Noël Coward comedies: Fallen Angels: Julia and Fred and Willy and Jane are happily married and the best of friends, until a postcard arrives with news of the imminent arrival of a certain handsome Frenchman - gay, debonair, and utterly sophisticated. Performed by Annette Bening, et al. Hay Fever: A country house weekend goes haywire when the guests and their hosts play a game of romantic musical chairs. Performed by Eric Stoltz, et al. Private Lives: On the French Rivera, the lights of a yacht are reflected in the water and in the eyes of four hilariously mismatched lovers. Perhaps Coward’s greatest comedy, Private Lives shimmers with romance, desire and bittersweet truth. Performed by Rosalind Ayres, et al. Design For Living: Three terminally stylish friends attempt to uncoil their twisted love triangle in this sexy and scandalous gem. Written in 1932, the play was deemed extremely daring. Performed by Michelle Arthur, et al. Present Laughter: Stage star Garry Essendine struggles to plan his trip to Africa while his flat is invaded by a love struck ingénue, an adulterous producer, a married seductress, Garry’s estranged wife Liz and an aspiring playwright who is quite, quite mad. Performed by: Ian Oglivy, Yeardley Smith, et al. Blithe Spirit: A convivial evening party among friends is transformed when a séance conjures the ghost of Elvira, the host’s first wife, who delights in wreaking havoc among the living. Performed by: Rosalind Ayres, Ian Ogilvy, et al. Exclusive bonus material: Two rarely-performed shorts by Noël Coward, Design for Rehearsing and Age Cannot Wither, as well as conversations on Coward with Barry Day (Noel Coward Foundation) and John Lahr (The New Yorker). 1. Once upon a time, I was a mute captive who wished for death. Now, I´m stowed away on a yacht. Saved and taken, the thief who stole me demands my voice, my past, my everything. I won´t give in. But Elder refuses to take no for an answer. He pushes and cajoles, slowly discovering who I am. Until I find out he plays the cello to escape his demons, all while his music conjures mine. He´s rich, I´m bankrupt. I´m mute by choice, he´s curious by nature. So many reasons why we can never work. But that doesn´t stop our connection, our passion. Until one night, he ruins everything. And our relationship becomes twisted and full of sin. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Kylie C. Stewart, Eric Rolon. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/086521/bk_acx0_086521_sample.mp3. Eric Linklater´s brilliant novel tells the story of a double existence. Evan Gaffikin, 60ish, grumpy, and bored with his dull commercial success, discovers and develops his power to dream: to dream in such depth and in such glowing reality that he is able to escape his extraordinary existence. We learn of his double life as scenes from Gaffikin´s real life alternate with his surrealistic, vivid, and often hilariously bawdy forays into the world of unreality. As his dream-world and its remarkable characters, gradually get the upper hand, the tension of the novel rises and the climactic sequence - in a yacht off the Hebrides - is mysterious and exciting. A Terrible Freedom could, perhaps, be described as an idiosyncratic venture into the realm of science fiction; but it may be preferable to see it as a conventional novel built with classical composure of unconventional material. Either way it is a tour de force of imagination and narrative skills. About the Author: Eric Linklater (1899-1974) wrote scores of novels for adults and children. He was also a journalist in India, commander of a wartime fortress in the Orkney Islands, and rector of Aberdeen University. 1. Language: English. Narrator: John Lee.
